1999 / 2000: A REVIEW

West London Initiative on Single Homelessness

Introduction

In Knightsbridge in 2000, to a rough sleeper, this is home.

The government has set itself the target of "reducing the numbers of rough sleepers by two-thirds by 2002". (DETR report July 1998)

According to the same report, "Over the course of a year, at least 2,400 people spend some time sleeping rough in London, 1,800 are new arrivals.

These numbers have fallen dramatically from 2,000 a night sleeping rough in central London in the early '90s."

All the evidence WISH is seeing points to an increase in rough sleeping in West London, suggesting the problem is merely being displaced to outer London and not being solved.

WISH has always and will continue to meet the many challenges presented by single homelessness in West London.
