West London Initiative on Single Homelessness

The All Night Café

We know from extensive published research that many homeless people are turned away, or excluded from, hostels and night shelters every evening of the year. These are the people we see sleeping rough in our public places.

In the winter months we know that many will die from diseases such as hypothermia, influenza or other diseases which most of us consider just a nuisance exacerbated by the lack of suitable shelter.

To help to combat this WISH is developing a plan to open an "All Night Café" which, from the outset, aims to provide a warm, dry, welcoming and safe environment.

Basic hot food and drinks will be available at no cost, with more "exotic" fare offered at an affordable price.

We would like to think that in the future we could expand the range of services offered to include, for example, a laundry, clothing store and medical and advice services.

The "All Night Café" will work in close conjunction with the Outreach service to offer an integrated service to West London’s rough sleepers.

A business plan is now being developed to further this project. It is anticipated that the cost will be in the region of £100-150,000 per annum for which we must secure ongoing funding. The operation of the Café will require three employed staff and a minimum one hundred volunteers on a roster.
