| November was a tense time with just over a month to go
before the Roof opened. We had placed orders for portacabins that would
house the toilets and showers; cookers and fridges. We were busy finding
a supply of mattresses, clothing, towels, blankets and carpet and were
writing to companies for donations of toiletries, medical and dental supplies
and anything else we would need. The biggest concern then was finding a
building in which to hold the Roof. |

| A few months previously we made contact with
many commercial estate agents as well as anyone else who might be able
lend us a building. The letters were followed up and every spare minute
was spent calling back those who showed some interest. |
Late November, we confirmed that we could have the use
of a building in Brentford. We surveyed the site and found that much work
needed to be done as it had been neglected and vandals had caused damage
both inside and out. We decided the areas in which people were going to
sleep and where the kitchen, showers, clothing store and other services
were to be located. |

| We started by making the building secure, connecting phones
and power, then recommissioning the heating, lighting and plumbing. At
the same time a massive clear up operation was underway and there were
lots of leaks in the roof that needed to be dealt with. Every day saw the
delivery of more supplies and equipment. |
