Throughout the year WISH was researching the needs of homeless people often with a focus on health. People sleeping rough have an incidence of a range of physical health problems 2 to 3 times higher than average. For those living on the streets a user friendly service that addresses their particular needs and is readily accessible is needed. "The literature suggests that on-site clinics, located in emergency shelters, are effective approaches to providing acceptable and accessible health care to the homeless." (Malloy C: et al. J Community Health Nurs, 7:25-36. 1990)

Over the years we have found that approximately two thirds of our guests at the Roof will access one or more of the healthcare services provided. On average, 68% visit the medical room, a total of around 150 visits to see the first aider, nurse or doctor each year. Nearly half treated by the chiropodists, one third see the dentist and just under of quarter of them have a free eye test and glasses provided by the optician. Overall the healthcare services at the Roof cater for over 240 consultations in the week it is open. An understanding of the health problems amongst the homeless population helps us provide the most useful service we can. It allows us to ensure we request appropriate supplies from pharmaceutical companies and that the volunteers we seek include suitably qualified personnel.
.. The incoming Mayor of London appointed Glenda Jackson M.P. to be responsible for formulating policy regarding London's homeless. WISH, in conjunction with other homelessness agencies, assisted and advised the GLA. As result of this a consultative document will be published.
