West London Initiative on Single Homelessness

Summer 2001

Sunday Breakfast Club ROOF
The Breakfast Club is now into its second year and both the clients and volunteers have settled into a routine.

Preparation for each Sunday morning commences with a check of the shopping list, then a trip to the supermarket for bread, sausages, bacon, eggs and tins of beans and tomatoes. Given that the average number of cooked breakfasts is between 45 and 50 each week the quantities are large, so there is usually a discussion at the check out about what the items are for and what WISH is about.

The volunteers arrive at 8.30 am and prepare to serve breakfasts at 9am. There is usually a queue when the doors open and many of the people are regulars. Because of this regular contact a warm friendly atmosphere has built up over the months between the clients and the volunteers.
At 12.30 farewells are said on both sides and the volunteers clear up and are usually gone by 1pm.

It is hard to imagine but it is nearly seven months since the last ROOF.
For the 2001 ROOF we were very lucky to have use of the same building as we had had in 2000. This meant that considerable time and effort was saved as we were familiar with the building and where everything went and how we needed to run it.

We opened on the 23rd December and closed on the morning of the 31st December. The weather during the ROOF was bitterly cold and rarely got above freezing.

During the ROOF there was a good and friendly atmosphere. As usual we provided a high standard of meals and the guests also had access to showers, clothing store, doctors, dentist and live musical entertainment. The latter ranged from Trad Jazz to Rock.

HELP NEEDED URGENTLY

The running of these services is entrusted to Working Groups. To ensure the continuance and survival of WISH, we urgently need people who are prepared to give time and commitment throughout the year. If you are prepared to accept the responsibility and challenge of planning and delivering these services, as well as developing new ones please contact us NOW, or come along and talk to us on 18th August (see overleaf).

WITHOUT YOUR INVOLVEMENT IT WILL NOT BE POSSIBLE TO CONTINUE TO OFFER THESE SERVICES TO WEST LONDONS HOMELESS
