West London Initiative on Single Homelessness
WISH NEWSLETTER
SUMMER 1998

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
WISH is entirely reliant on donations to maintain all of these services.

We need to raise £20 000 every year!

WISH was founded in September 1995 by a group of volunteers to provide temporary accommodation, help and support to homeless people in West London. Since that time the charity has established itself as an essential part of the network of service providers in the area.

The operation of the charity depends entirely on the support of approximately four hundred other volunteers, who donate considerable time and effort to the work. We continue to maintain contact between volunteers through occasional training sessions and the WISH Newsletter, initiated in 1996

WISH'S ongoing aims are:

  • To recognise the problems of single homelessness;
  • To raise awareness of those problems;
  • To identify the needs associated with single homelessness;
  • To take action to meet those needs;
  • To campaign or petition on behalf of single homelessness people.
Given the site problems experienced in 1996, we were delighted to be given the opportunity to work in conjunction with Jesus House in providing this year's Christmas Roof. It was considered by everyone to be a peaceful, safe and enjoyable experience.
Further research has been initiated to enable us to expand our direct service provision by means of a soup and clothing run. The need has been determined by a combination of information previously gathered from other organistions, feedback from Roof guests and outreach work carried out over the Christmas period. One of our main aims in 1998 will be to raise the funds necessary to provide this additional service.

WISH'S outreach work over Christmas, together with the information gathered through research, has confirmed the very real need for a regular hot food and clothing service.

To achieve this objective requires a further
£20 000 per annum!

RIVERSIDE RAMBLE
One of WISH'S most popular fundraising initiatives is the Riverside Ramble - a 15 mile sponsored walk along the newly reopened Thames Towpath from Putney Bridge to Hampton Court. This year's walk takes place on Sunday the 20th September.

To take part you need to fill in and return the tear off slip on the enclosed sponsor form. Or there is also the option of walk to or from the half way point at Richmond.

Fear not, if unable to take part in the Ramble you still have the opportunity to support the event by either marshalling or sponsoring a walker. For further details contact the WISH office on 0181 890 0187.
