Chef's kitchen

West London Initiative on Single Homelessness
When we first arrived "on site" and looked at the building that in a few weeks would be the 2000 WISH Christmas Roof, we were all struck by the amount of work it would take.

Chef however was delighted with what was to be the kitchen. It was bigger than he had expected.

Others were more concerned about how to get sinks fitted with water going into them and stopping water coming through the roof.

However after a lot of sweeping, cleaning and repairing, Chef's kitchen began to take shape and the food was delivered and put in the cold store.
Chef was right about his kitchen and by midday on December 23rd, a hot lunch was ready and soon after the Roof opened its doors to the small queue of guests, that had already formed at the front gates.
Volunteers worked hard in the kitchen, under the direction of the chef. As well as chopping vegetables and helping cook the meals, there was always mountains of washing up.
Our guests recieved 3 hot meals a day. A full cooked breakfast, prepapred by the night cook was welcome each morning. Lunch comprised of soup and something like sausage rolls or jacket potatoes and in the evening there was a filling stew or roast dinner. On Christmas day, supper was served slightly earlier as chef and his helpers had prepared a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. Due to some generous donations there were also treats of sweets, cakes and fresh fruit between meals.
