The Sunday Breakfast Club

West London Initiative on Single Homelessness

Background

The Christmas Roof had been WISH's main point of contact with rough sleepers. Guests at our Roof who attended Cricklewood Day Centre reported back to them enthusiastically about WISH and as a result of this, a closer working relationship developed between the two organisations. Due to budgetary restraints Cricklewood Homeless Concern were unable to open their doors on Sundays. WISH was invited to take over the running of the day centre on Sundays to fill the gap in service provision.

On Sunday the 14th of January, WISH launched this new service.

Service offered

Initially, the centre was open from 9am to midday. An inexpensive cooked breakfast, comprising:
sausage, bacon, egg and beans or tomatoes is available with free tea and toast.
Since the begining of July, the opening times have been extended by half an hour and we are monitoring the service with a view to extending it further.

As well as enjoying a good breakfast, the clients can relax reading the newspapers provided or chat with the volunteers.

The service has been successful with a good atmosphere and a regular client group attending. We have served an average of 28 clients/breakfasts each week.

Volunteers

Volunteers may be involved in cooking, serving food or tea, greeting clients at the door, working on reception, tidying away crockery etc. if you would like to help, you can fill in a form on-line or contact the WISH office.
Volunteers are organised into 6 teams who rotate to provide cover for the service. Each team has a team leader and a member of WISH's management committee is associated with each team who is a liaison for the team leader. The team leaders have formed a working group which will take the service forward. They are looking into extending the services provided to include things such as clothing, showers, healthcare and advice.

Being in one location throughout the year means that we are able to provide some stability to the rough sleepers in that area. WISH sees this as a good
opportunity not only to increase contact with our client group but also as a way of developing links with other organisations and thereby ensure that services to homeless people in West London complement each other.
